An honorary doctorate is awarded to distinguished individuals who have achieved pre-eminence in their profession or who have made significant contributions to the development of their country or society. Honorary doctorates are often given to those who have either made groundbreaking contributions in a specific field or, more commonly, as a “thank you” to those who have made substantial donations to the institution. The conferment of honorary doctorates brings goodwill and contributes to building a network of research and academic collaborations. Honorary Awards are approved by the University Council following a rigorous selection process. This process involves the application of specified criteria and due diligence procedures, including risk assessments, to protect both the recipient and the University.
4 Criteria for Awarding:
To preserve their prestige, honorary awards will only be granted to individuals of appropriate standing. Therefore, there is no expectation or requirement for the Council to make an award in any given year.
5 Revocation:
To protect the integrity of the awards and the reputation of the University, the Council may, at its sole discretion, revoke an Honorary Award if it believes that the recipient’s continued association with the University could bring disrepute to the institution.
6Confidentiality:
All nominations must be treated with the utmost confidentiality. A nominee must not be informed of or consulted about their nomination at any stage.

Nominators should not inform nominees that they are being considered for an honorary degree. The University will not release individual nomination outcomes until a public announcement is made regarding the honorary degree recipients for a particular convocation.
Honorary degree recipients are invited to give the Convocation address, though they may decline the invitation. Honorary degrees are not awarded posthumously, except if the award has been accepted and arrangements have been made before the nominee’s death. The citation for the honorary degree should not exceed three minutes in length.
The Senate has the authority to revoke an honorary degree and all associated privileges. Revocation is subject to a vote by the Senate, based on a recommendation from the Honorary Degrees Committee.
